Esbat Traditions : The Goddess Bath

*blows the dust off of her blog*

Sheesh. I have been absent for about two months which is pretty terrible! Yikes. Anyways…I want to get back into the habit of writing and updating her more often, and I figured since the full moon is coming up on Thursday I would do a post on esbat celebrations and traditions.

The full moon is something that has instilled wonder and awe in people since the dawn of time. It has an effect on everyone, whether they recognize it or not, and those who are magickally inclined are able to harness and work with its intense energies. I recognize the full moon esbats each month, though sometimes I will do other esbat rituals and magick at the other phases (ie: new, dark, etc.). One of my favorite things to do on a full moon night is what I call a “Goddess Bath”. It is so relaxing and luxurious, and it will surely bring out anyone’s inner Goddess.

Supplies needed:
1. Bubble bath, bath salts, bath beads, etc. Any bath supplies you prefer.
2. A muslin cloth OR a (clean!) sock you don’t mind getting wet (You will see why in the instructions.)
3. Herbs you like that correspond to relaxation. Some good examples are: rose petals, rose buds, lavender and lemon grass.
4. Candles
5. Quiet relaxing music
6. Any lotions you may use after soaking in a bath.

Instructions:
1. Fill the muslin cloth with the herbs you selected and tie it shut.
If you don’t have one, take the sock and turn it inside out and put your hand in (like a “sock poppet”, inside out). Now put a bit of each herb you selected into the palm of your hand which is inside of the sock. Once you’re done, take the sock off your hand flipping it right side out as you do. Now all of the herbs you selected should be neatly inside of the sock. Tie the open end shut with a hair elastic or rubber band.
2. Fill the bath tub with hot water and put your herb satchel into the water. Add any bath ingredients you want in addition to the herbs, or if you want to use JUST the herbs, that’s fine too. Whatever you like.
3. Light the candles, turn out the lights and relax. Soak as long as you want. Play calm music while doing so if you like. Take this time to indulge yourself. Shave your legs with the good shaving cream, focus on pampering.
4. When you’re done bathing, stand up in the bath and then drain the water. Towel off and apply any lotions you want. I use my expensive lotions and luxury items when I am taking a “Goddess bath”. Indulge. :)
5. When you’re all dry and feeling relaxed, do some journaling. I have found in the past a lot of profound insights have come to me when journaling afterwards.

Enjoy, beautiful Goddesses.
Blessed be,

Tarot Friday

Today’s card is…the Ace of Pentacles.

aceofpentacles

(The Ace of Pentacles in the Shadowscapes Tarot deck which is the deck I use.)

When upright this card to me speaks of new abundance and prosperity coming your way. Wealth. Hard work paying off financially. Sacred invoking spirals, things coming towards you. Financial reward and security.
When the card is reversed it indicates to me a financial set-back. A reversal in fortunes. A financial goal not paying off either right now or in the future. Could also indicate a feeling of emptiness or a lack or roots. Someone wandering aimlessly. This could indicate an imbalance in the root chakra.

What do you all think of this card? Do you agree with my interpretations?

Blessed be!

Tarot Friday

I have had every intention of doing my “Tarot Tuesday” project. However, Tuesdays have been busy for me, and will be for the foreseeable future. So I am considering changing the date to Thursday or Friday.

Right now, it’s Friday. So we’re going to give this a shot and see how it goes. So “Tarot Friday” it is. Today’s card is…

10ofswords

(The Ten of Swords in the Shadowscapes Tarot Deck which is the desk I use.)

(Now, keep in mind the interpretations I am about to give are mine only. I have come to these conclusions based on how the cards speak to me. You may hold the same card and come up with an entirely different message.)

In the upright position, the ten of swords to me signals a feeling of downward spiral. The querent is either literally spiraling out of control in their life, or feels like they are. Their head might not be in the best place. This card speaks to feelings of depression, despair, grief, loss, turmoil and chaos. This card signals a feeling of being in a dark place.

In the reversed position, the card tells me a story of someone coming back from a dark place. Someone who has overcome a dark period in their life and is either back in a good place  or is close to returning to the light. An important life lesson may have been learned while the querent was in a dark spot, and they should carry those messages with them. Lean on friends and family as you rebuild from the turmoil, and your life will be back to normal soon.

How do you all see this card? Do you agree with me? Does it say something else? Leave comments on this post and we can share thoughts. Thanks for reading!

Blessed be!

Tarot cards versus Oracle cards

I am and always will be a student of cartomancy. Cartomancy is the practice of divining the future via cards.

I have been studying tarot and its interpretation for about six years now proactively, and am always discovering new symbols and ways the cards will speak to me.

Recently I have purchased myself a deck of oracle cards and they feel completely different to me than tarot cards do. How does oracle differ from tarot? Easy. Tarot cards follow a structure. Typically it is a deck of seventy-eight cards which are divided into the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana are then divided into four suits (typically pentacles, swords, cups and wands, though the terms used can vary from deck to deck). Oracle cards, however, follow little to no pattern and have a structure of their own. They don’t follow the traditional tarot organization, and operate by their own rules.

As a little background, the first tarot deck I purchased was The Witch’s Tarot. I bought this deck first because I was right in the beginning of my path as a Wiccan, about eight years ago and I had read that this deck was supposed to be geared towards Wiccans. Now, while I don’t agree with some of the titles to the cards, that deck did help me learn to read a bit and get my foot into the door. Next I purchased the Universal Rider-Waite deck. This is the traditional, go-to deck of anyone who is wanting to learn tarot. The Universal Rider-Waite deck differs from the classic Rider-Waite deck in that the colors and images have been “re-done” and the colors have been made more vivid. The back of the card is also a starry blue and silver in place of the classic crosshatched/plaid-like pattern that the classic Rider-Waite deck sports. This deck got me even deeper into tarot and I was able to connect with the cards really well with this deck. The images were easy to hang meanings on, and I grew a deep bond with that deck. The third deck I purchased is the Shadowscapes deck which I absolutely love. I have loved the work of Stephanie Pui Mun Law for decades and when they announced she had created a tarot deck I was over the moon with excitement. I rushed out and purchased it. I immediately fell in love with the cards and their rich symbolism and beautiful artwork sung to me. This is the only tarot deck I read from to this day. I spent many hours going over each card, learning its symbols and picture, letting it speak its story to me.

As I mentioned above, I recently have acquired an oracle deck, which up until now is something that had never really appealed to me. One of my coven sisters bought the Wisdom of the House of Night oracle deck, which is made to accompany the House of Night young adult book series. While I have not read the House of Night series, the images are still beautiful and the cards spoke to me as I shuffled through my coven sister’s deck. I had seen the deck in my local bookstore a few times and each time I picked it up, turned it over in my hands a few times and considered it. Finally, I purchased it. I cleansed the deck like I would any other and began shuffling the cards. They have a completely different feel than a normal tarot deck and I enjoy the energy of these cards. The readings so far have been accurate and informative and I look forward to the journey we will have together.

Now, you may be asking yourself….How do I know which type of deck to select? It is quite simple. In my opinion, oracle cards are a bit “easier” to master than tarot cards. Oracle cards are way more open to the interpretation of the reader. Tarot cards are highly intuitive and up to the interpretation of the reader as well, of course, but with tarot you have long standing and accepted “meanings” of each card that have been around and been in use for a long time. Oracle cards function on their own. So to any new student of the cards I might suggest an oracle deck just to get used to reading cards and interpreting freely. Then possibly picking up a Rider-Waite deck and getting into tarot which can be a bit more work. Bear in mind, this is all my opinion and observation. What works for me may not work for another.

When it comes to selecting a deck, let the cards do the talking. Choose a deck that speaks to you or has an energy that appeals to you. If you find yourself repeatedly going back to the same deck while shopping over and over again…take that as a possible symbol that those cards might be for you. Choose one that has artwork that you enjoy if you are able to shuffle through an open deck instead of just looking at the packaging and box.

Lastly, after cleansing your new deck, I suggest journaling. Grab a blank notebook or open a new word document on your computer and go through each card. Get to know it. Write your thoughts on it compared to the “traditional” interpretation of that card if you’re using a tarot deck. Write down your feelings about the symbols and images used on each card. Let them speak to you. Then shuffle well, and shuffle again to get them all thorough mixed up (they are going to come packaged in order) and let the fun begin!

Blessed be,

On paying for magickal services and lazy newcomers

Today’s blog topic is in response to a video I saw on youtube the other day by the user “Invokingthebalance”. In her video she discussed when she feels it is appropriate to pay for magickal services, and when she feels it is not. So I figured I would weight in with my thoughts.

Magickal services are, in my opinion, just as valid as any other. If you are providing a service to a client such as a tarot reading, blending a specific oil or incense for them, doing a palm reading, teaching a class, tutoring someone, etc I feel you are perfectly within your rights to ask for payment or compensation of some sort if you choose to do so. The decision to charge or not is up to the person providing, but I feel it is acceptable.

I see a lot of people these days wandering around looking for teachers, mentors, metaphysical services and more, then saying that asking for money in return is horrible…that they are doing the work of the God and Goddess and they shouldn’t ask for compensation. This irritates me not only as an every day Pagan but as someone who teaches and provides metaphysical services to the community in general. I feel that sometimes people get all uppity over paying for metaphysical services because sometimes this does not come in a tangible form. If you have a palm reading done, you are not necessarily walking away with a physical item. However, you are paying for that person’s time, knowledge, practice and skills. Just the same as in any other profession or line of work.

There are, unfortunately some people who are out to scam others and are charging for bogus services to take people’s money. This, unfortunately happens in many other careers and lines of work and the only thing I can say for this is to exercise caution. You could get scammed by a shotty car mechanic just as easily as a shotty tarot reader, so just be smart with your decisions.

This brings me to my next point which ties in to my first: Lazy newcomers. I don’t mean to sound snotty, but bear with me.  In browsing the Wiccan and Pagan community online I have been seeing so many posts from people who are looking for help and guidance. I am all for helping others out and feel there is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking advice. However, most of these posts are people saying they are newcomers to Wicca, have been studying a few weeks and are seeking a teacher and coven to join. They haven’t started doing any reading themselves (or barely have) and have made no attempt to help themselves first. They are simply looking for a teacher to prepackage and hand their years of experience and study to them. This doesn’t sit well with me. If I receive a message from a newcomer saying they have discovered the path, aren’t sure where to start and would like to ask my opinion on some recommended reading I am absolutely happy to point them in a good direction.  If I receive a message from a newcomer saying they have discovered the path and are looking for someone to teach them, I am more than likely going to kindly reply with a list of good books and web sites. Please don’t hear me wrong my readers, there is nothing wrong with being new to the religion. It’s a very exciting time. I am simply stating that doing some research and studying on your own for a while before expecting someone to take you under their wing for free is wise.

What do you all think of this? Should you pay for magickal services? Are my statements rude in regards to wanting newcomers to Wicca to study on their own first before expecting someone to take them under their wing? Feel free to comment with your thoughts.

Blessed be!

Tarot Tuesdays

Tarot Tuesdays is a new thing I am thinking about doing around here. Every Tuesday I will pull a card from my deck and talk about its meanings, inverted and upright, how I view it, etc. Is this something that sounds fun to everyone? Feel free to offer suggestions and we’ll see how this goes!

Blessed be, all.

Missing: God

Today’s blog topic is GOD. In the Wiccan community, I find a lot of emphasis on the Goddess…almost to the point where the entire God aspect is neglected. For a religion that preaches so much about balance, isn’t this odd? How does that make sense?

First, I have encountered people who worship mainly the Goddess because they have come from patriarchal religions like Christianity where everything is God-centric. They say that “God has had his turn…now it’s time for the Goddess to shine!” To be honest, even in this context that doesn’t make sense to me. To be able to fully understand Wicca, in my opinion of course, one needs to recognize and honor the balance between the divine masculine energy and divine feminine energy in nature, in the universe and ultimately in oneself. If you have blinders on and aren’t paying attention to one half of that equation, isn’t that living out of balance?

I have also encountered groups of Wiccans who place a high emphasis on the Goddess because that is how their tradition functions. Take Dianic Wicca for example. Dianic Wiccans focus highly on the feminine aspect of worship, even to the point where to attend their events you have to be “a woman born a woman”. Once again, this seems out of balance to me as well as being unkind to transgender individuals.

So how are some ways you can bring more God energy into your life? It’s rather simple. These are a few things I do on a regular basis that deal directly with the God.

1. Greet the sun. When I walk outside I usually greet the sun (the same way I would greet the moon) with a smile and a wave, or a simple “Hey dad.” (I view the God and Goddess as my spiritual Mother and Father, so I sometimes refer to them as Mom or Dad. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, use whatever term feels right to you.)

2. Have a separate candle on your altar for the Goddess and the God. This is common practice, to have a God candle and a Goddess candle on your altar. However, taking the time to personalize those candles with specific oils, stones around it, carvings, etc can be a nice way to connect to the divine. If you have a patron God, carve his symbols or name into the candle. Dress it with oils or herbs that are sacred to that God, or you feel correlate to him. Use stones around the candle or on the candle holder that represent God to you. When you light your God candle, thank him for the blessings you have in your life. Then move to the Goddess candle (or reverse order, whatever you do normally) and thank her for your blessings in an individual way. By addressing the God and Goddess as separate (but equal) entities and beings in your life, you’re bringing yourself a bit closer to deity.

3. Study Gods through out Pagan traditions. There are many Gods. Take some time and learn about some of them. A few books I would recommend are “The Witches’ God” by Janet and Stewart Farrar and “Every day Sun Magick” by Dorothy Morrison.  I especially like the Dorothy Morrison book…she has a lot of good viewpoints on God worship and every day recognition as well as ideas and spells to incorporate into every day life. She has a companion book to this one, called “Every day Moon Magick” which is equally as awesome, in my opinion. You never know, researching different Gods may end up landing you a patron deity if you’re searching for one (or even if you’re not haha).

4. Recognize that the God has aspects too. In Wicca, we focus a lot on the aspects of the Goddess: the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. However…the God has aspects too! Some view it as the Son, the Lover and the Sage, some use other terms. The God can also be worshiped in many forms; You could view him as a God of the forest type, all green and wooded. You could see the God as a Cernunnos figure with his grand antlers. The list could go on on forever.

5. Observe the God’s cycles throughout the day. This idea is straight from the Dorothy Morrison book I mentioned before, “Every day Sun Magick”. In terms of the Goddess, we observe her cycle through the moon. It waxes, becomes full, wanes and turns dark. Rinse and repeat. This takes roughly 28 days. In Morrison’s book, she states that the God goes through his transition every single day. She has terms for his aspects, but I am going to summarize for simplicity’s sake. At the rise of the sun, he is new and young. He is a child. By noon when the sun is high, he is at his peek of power and is approaching becoming an adult. He is a strong, virile male. The sun begins to go down and he reaches an older phase of life, his power waning. By sun down, he is the sage, sacrificing old God who gives himself up so the sun can rise again the next day. Consider this in your daily life, and try planning a ritual or two around solar timing. You’d be surprised how much power solar energy can lend to a working.

I hope some of these ideas help any of you to incorporate more God energy into your spiritual path if you’re looking to add it. May the God and Goddess bless you on your journey and thank you for reading.

Blessed be.

Magickal timing in nature

With all of this Hurricane Sandy drama all over the news, I decided to publish a post on magickal timing in nature. Working in tune with the weather can help add an extra kick to any magickal working you’re planning. Just consider the elements in play and go from there. Simple, right? Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Rain, thunder and lightning and extreme storms – Go outside with a few mason jars and collect rain water! Save it and use it to cleanse and charge your tools (especially ones like your athame and wand.) This water is very charged with energies from the skies, so it’s always nice to have on hand. You could also do magickal workings at this time to cleanse yourself in a metaphysical sense and get rid of any energetic build up you may be carrying that doesn’t belong to you.

Snow storms – Snow storms are a time for staying in the home, being warm and cozy and enjoying the time with loved ones. This may be a good opportunity to do some journaling or general meditations and get a little introspection in. You could also collect a bowl of snow and put it in the freezer. You may choose to do a working with it to stop or “freeze” bad habits and thoughts you may have and remove them from your life.

Blazing hot days – Use this time to focus on passion, movement and forward motion. Use the heat and the blazing God energy from the sun to propel you forward into all of your endeavors with energy and vigor.

Windy fall days – Collect leaves, pine cones and other seasonal objects for your altar! You could also write an intent on a leaf while in sacred space and then release it outside to the wind, sending your intent to the universe.

Those are just a few ideas that came to me, there are many more and you could take this idea to many creative places. Feel free to comment with ideas of your own.

If you are on the east coast (like me!!) please stay safe in this storm. Take care of yourself as well as your friends and family. Be sure to bring any pets inside and have an emergency plan for them too! Love and light to you all.

Blessed be.
